BOTANICAL PORTRAIT Peru Balsam is typically an 82 ft tall tree with a very smooth trunk and intensely beautiful leaves in the top of the tree. Every part of the tree, even the fruit, bears the juice for this oil. SOURCE The Peru Balsam trees originally grew on the coast of El Salvador called the ‘Balsam Coast’ Though it is now mostly available in all of North America.ORIGIN Peru Balsam was used in earlier times to stimulate the heart and increase blood pressure. Peru Balsam was used to lessen things like mucus secretions. PRINCIPLE CONSTITUENTS Crude Balsam contains approximately 50-64% cinnamein and 20-28% resin. Peru Balsam contains chemicals like benzoic and cinnamic acid. HISTORY Imported from Callao via Peru, this plant was called Peru Balsam even though it is not necessarily native to Peru. Acclaimed Spanish Physician and Botanist Nicolas Monardes knew about it during the fifteenth century. The plant was first officially documented in German Pharmacopoeia.
