BOTANICAL PORTRAIT A shrub that reaches a peak height of about 20 in, Pennyroyal has smooth, round stalks and purple flowers that are very aromatic. Pennyroyal bears grey-green, oval leaves and has a fibrous creeping root. SOURCE The Pennyroyal Plant is native to Europe and some parts of Asia; the main producers of the Pennyroyal Essential Oil are Spain, Italy, Portugal, former Yugoslavia, Turkey, and Morocco. The highest quality Pennyroyal comes from France.ORIGIN The Pennyroyal Essential Oil was an oil that was originally used for digestive and menstrual problems as well as feverish colds. Pennyroyal has a well-deserved reputation as being an effective insect repellant. PRINCIPLE  CONSTITUENTS Pennyroyal Essential Oil can contain as much as 96% Pulegone with Menthone, Octanol, Piperitenone and trans-isopulegone also making appearances in its chemical makeup. HISTORY In earlier times, the Pennyroyal Plant was thought to purify the blood and be able to communicate to tainted water to make it safe to drink.
