Lime (Italy)

BOTANICAL PORTRAIT The Lime Tree is very similar to the Lemon Tree but grows a smaller, more bitter fruit than the lemon tree. The Lime Fruit has a green peel from which the Essential Oil is distilled and a green fleshy interior. SOURCE The fruit of the Lime Tree is believed to have been native to India or Malaysia. The trees were then grown on a large scale in Iraq or Persia which is where they began to gain popularity.ORIGIN The fruit and essential oil of the Lime is typically used as a substitute for lemons because of their very similar properties. PRINCIPLE CONSTITUENTS Lime contains less Limonene than lemons; 68.9% in the Lime Oil compared to 80% in the Lemon Essential Oil. HISTORY Limes were used in conjunction with lemons by sailors who spend long periods at sea to prevent scurvy. Limes were prefered over Lemons as they had a longer lifespan and contained just as much Vitamin C Vitamin C content.
