Botanical Portrait

Basil typically grows as a light green, silky-leaved plant measuring between 30 and 130 cm in height, and 1 to 6 cm broad. The flowers of the Basil Plant are white and are arranged in a terminal spike.

Source

Basil grows wild all over Mediterranean Europe, especially in Italy and multiple other parts of Europe. However, Basil is typically produced by Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Brazil, and Indonesia. Basil plants are native to India in areas like Tulsi.

Origin

Basil originally came from India and was used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It was thoroughly familiar to Theophrastus and Dioscorides, philosophers of the Ancient Greek era.

Principal Constituents

The strong clove scent of sweet Basil is derived from eugenol. The citrus scent of Lemon Basil and Lime Basil reflects their higher concentration of citral.

History

Basil takes its name from the Greek word for King, "Basileum." Basil has been known by various popular names such as "Joy-of-the-Mountains" or "Boy’s Joy."

Skin Care

Basil contains linalool, which has mild analgesic properties that may relieve insect bites and stings, promoting quicker healing and reducing discomfort.

Immune System

Basil’s natural properties may help the body fight off colds, flu, fevers, and infections. It is also traditionally used to reduce fever.

Digestive System

Basil Essential Oil is often used to support digestion and may help relieve indigestion, flatulence, and nausea.
