Anise can be an evergreen-like tree, small or medium and generally about 8m (26ft) tall. It is a member of the Schisandraceae family and has axillary flowers for leaves. Fruit of the Anise is harvested before it is ripened then sun dried.

Anise Star is native to Mediterranean Europe as well as Southwest Asia. The main producer of the Anise Star is China. The Anise Star has a very similar taste to other spices such as fennel and liquorices.

Origin

The Star Anise Seeds have been eaten for centuries to sweeten breath and promote digestion. Japanese culture uses them as decoration for tombs and uses the bark as incense.
