The Bergamot tree (Citrus bergamia) is a small citrus reaching about 4.5 m in height. It bears smooth, oval leaves and small, round fruit that ripens from green to yellow. Often compared to an orange in appearance, the essential oil is expressed from the fruit peel.
Originally native to tropical Asia, bergamot is now cultivated across Europe and Asia, most notably in Calabria and Southern Italy, and is also grown commercially on the Ivory Coast.
In traditional Italian folk medicine, bergamot essential oil was used primarily for fevers often associated with malaria and for intestinal worms. Today, it is appreciated worldwide for a broad range of wellness applications.
